Abstract

The aim of this study was to analyse the dynamics and patterns of the employed population's involvement in the most common disease prevention practices. The analysis is based on data from the Russian Longitudinal Monitoring Survey (RLMS-HSE) conducted by the National Research University Higher School of Economics. The study revealed a significant increase in preventive behaviour among the employed population, manifested, on the one hand, in increased participation in preventive medical examinations and screenings, and on the other, in a decrease in the prevalence of the most common harmful habits among employed people—smoking and alcohol consumption. At the same time, the restrained and cautious participation of employees in preventive vaccinations and the low level of awareness among employees regarding occupational disease prevention, health maintenance, and promotion cause concern. Coverage of the employed population with emergency vaccination against coronavirus infection was low during the rapid spread of this extremely dangerous epidemic. Working women are much more active than their male colleagues in all preventive practices, with the exception of physical exercise and/or sports. Workers who continue to work after reaching retirement age are more likely to participate in most preventive measures. Significant differences in preventive activity levels were found depending on the employment structure. Workers employed by state-owned enterprises are shown to be more engaged in preventive measures than those employed by private sector companies. Workers employed in industries with hazardous and dangerous working conditions are more likely to participate in preventive health measures, while those whose work involves providing personal services to others are more conscious of maintaining their health. Those most at risk include those employed in the informal sector, as well as those who travel without a permanent job, who lack full social protection and have limited access to health care.
